What Business Leaders Can Learn from Lydia Ko's Success

As 2024 ends, Lydia Ko’s remarkable career offers a perfect reminder of what it takes to succeed, whether in sports or business. Her story of resilience, growth and excellence is an inspiration for anyone looking to set goals and achieve them in 2025.

Here’s how Lydia’s journey can guide your business leadership:

  1. Commit to Continuous Improvement

Lydia Ko’s rise and sustained success are rooted in her relentless pursuit of improvement. She adapts to challenges, learns from setbacks, and stays ahead of the game. For businesses, this highlights the importance of innovation and adaptability—essential traits as we head into a new year full of opportunities and uncertainties.

  2. Resilience is Key

Lydia’s ability to bounce back from challenges reminds us of the power of resilience. As businesses navigate economic fluctuations, setbacks are inevitable. What matters is how you respond—by learning, adapting, and pressing forward with determination.

  3. Balance Drives Long-Term Success

This year, Lydia has emphasised mental health and well-being, a message that resonates for all of us. A healthy, balanced approach leads to sustainable success, whether in personal endeavours or business operations. As you plan for 2025, consider how you can integrate well-being into your workplace for stronger teams and better results.

Setting up for Success in 2025

As we approach 2025, there are positive signs for New Zealand’s economy, with inflation easing after a prolonged period of volatility. While this is welcome news, it’s not a time to become complacent. Businesses must remain proactive to stay ahead of the game in 2025. Here are some strategies to keep your business resilient and adaptable in a changing economic landscape:

1. Maintain an ROI Mindset

  • Even with inflation stabilising, cost pressures haven’t disappeared. Now more than ever, it’s essential to ensure every dollar spent delivers measurable value to your business.

  • Action Tip: Evaluate every expense and investment by its potential return—whether it’s improving efficiency, increasing revenue, or strengthening customer loyalty. Focus on activities that drive tangible results, like technology upgrades or customer-focused initiatives.

2. Don’t Let Margins Slip

  • While inflation may be cooling, rising wages and other fixed costs could still impact profitability. Keeping a close eye on margins will be critical.

  • Action Tip: Regularly review your pricing strategy and cost structure. Consider whether it’s time to adjust pricing to reflect rising costs while maintaining transparency with your customers.

3. Stay Agile to Changing Conditions

  • Economic stabilisation doesn’t mean conditions are static. Consumer behaviour, market demands and competition will continue to shift. Businesses that stay flexible and adapt quickly will have the edge.

  • Action Tip: Build flexibility into your business plan by preparing for multiple scenarios. Whether it’s adjusting your product mix or reallocating resources, being agile will keep you ahead of the curve.

4. Invest Strategically in Growth

  • As confidence slowly rebuilds, there’s an opportunity to position your business for growth. Strategic investments in areas like innovation, marketing, or team development can yield long-term benefits.

  • Action Tip: Identify areas where investment can give you a competitive edge, such as adopting new technologies or upskilling your team. Remember to assess these decisions through an ROI lens.

5. Keep Building Customer Relationships

  • Even as conditions improve, consumers may remain cautious. Businesses that provide consistent value and build trust with customers will stand out.

  • Action Tip: Strengthen communication with your customers, listen to their needs and continue delivering exceptional service to build loyalty.

6. Avoid Complacency

  • Stability can breed complacency, but economic conditions remain fragile. Staying vigilant and prepared for potential challenges will ensure you can adapt quickly if circumstances change.

  • Action Tip: Schedule regular reviews of your financials, market trends and customer feedback to stay ahead of any shifts in the environment.

Economic Outlook

While dropping interest rates signal positive change, it will likely take another 6–8 months before the true effects of inflation easing are felt. Many households and businesses are opting to fix mortgages for shorter terms or remain on floating rates, anticipating further interest rate drops in the new year. Until then, conditions will remain tight, making it crucial to stay disciplined. Cash is king—managing cash flow wisely, staying agile and following the tips above will help your business navigate this period. By staying focused now, you’ll be in a strong position to thrive in the second half of 2025 when the benefits of decreasing inflation take hold.

So, remember to stay proactive by protecting your margins, investing strategically and strengthening customer relationships. Like Lydia Ko’s journey of resilience and continuous improvement, success in 2025 will come from staying adaptable, focused and balanced to navigate challenges and seize opportunities.

WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO

Business Advisory Workshops

In 2024 we developed and introduced a few workshops aimed at supporting our clients and growing their businesses.

We have now successfully completed our first Trade's Collective Programme with some great feedback and positive responses from those who attended. We have also developed a Leadership Programme, which our Leadership Team piloted over the last couple months.

Both programmes can add valuable insights and tools to businesses and we are excited to offer these courses to more of our clients moving forward. Keep an eye out for updates on when the next round of workshops become available.

We're Online! Introducing Our New Website

We're excited to share that after many years of being "under construction", we now have a website! You can find us at www.chungca.co.nz

On there you'll find a look at our team, along with helpful resources and tools and our hope is that it will serve as a useful hub for staying connected with us.

Community Support

This year we made it a priority to give back to the community and support causes close to us. Recognising how the current economic climate has impacted charitable organisations, many of which are facing funding shortages, our team decided to focus on directing resources to make a meaningful difference.

This year we were proud to support:

  • Gumboot Friday

  • Breast Cancer Foundation

  • Hospice NZ

  • Food Fairies through The Aunties Charity

  • An up-and-coming NZ Track Cyclist

  • NZ Police Managers Guild Trust

These contributions reflect our commitment to helping both local and national initiatives that support well-being and community development. We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute and look forward to continuing this effort in 2025.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas, stay healthy and have a safe and happy holiday.
